Why this book

Every parent lives between two fears.

Hold on too tight, and kids rebel or never learn to stand on their own. Let go too soon, and they crash.

Think about the guardrails on a country highway. They don't steer the car or pick the destination. The driver does that. The rails are there for the moment a driver drifts toward the edge, so a mistake doesn't become a disaster.

That's the picture behind this book. Good guardrails give children room to make choices and learn from small mistakes, while protecting them from the ones that can't be undone. And as kids grow, the rails move farther out.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6 (ESV)

The road ahead

Your role changes as your kids grow.

The book follows the arc of a child's life through four stages, plus a fifth mode for the years after they leave home. The ages are reference points, not deadlines.

  1. Birth to about 5

    The Cop Years

Clear rules, safety, routines, and a lot of warmth. The rails are close and high, like a baby gate at the top of the stairs.

  2. About 5 to 12

    The Coach Years

More freedom, more practice, and plenty of feedback from the sidelines. You're teaching them to run the plays.

  3. 13 into the early 20s

    The Counselor Years

Conversation and renegotiated guardrails, as the rules move from outside your kid to inside.

  4. Launching into adulthood

    The Cheerleader Years

You're in the stands, celebrating their wins without trying to manage their lives.

  5. Grown kids, new families

    Consultant Mode

Ask before you advise. Counsel when it's invited, and pray for them by name.

Heard hundreds of times

The sayings the Cook kids could finish in their sleep.

Every family has a few lines that get repeated until they stick. These were ours, and you'll find the stories behind them throughout the book.

  • One wrong choice can change your life forever.
  • Cook kids do what's right, even when no one is watching.
  • Cook kids don't quit.
  • Your family is your family. They will always come before your friends.
  • Trust the Lord. He's faithful and will never let you go.
  • Just be kind.
  • We do what's right, not because we're afraid, but because it's the right thing to do.
  • You don't just marry a person. You marry a family.

About the authors

Joe & Danielle Cook

Joe and Danielle Cook have been married for more than 33 years. They raised four children, Jadon, Jaron, Sadie, and Dason, and learned along the way that parenting is one of life's greatest privileges and one of its hardest jobs. Today they're grandparents, watching a new generation grow up and remembering how little they knew the first time around.

Joe was a Division I track and field athlete at the University of Oklahoma. He has spent more than 30 years in pastoral ministry, including years as a hospice chaplain, alongside a career in business. He has sat with families on their best days and their worst ones, and those conversations shaped much of this book.

Danielle spent much of her adult life raising their four children while also building a business, serving in ministry, and mentoring women. She has a gift for bringing people together, and she makes sure everyone who gathers around her table feels welcome and loved. She believes the small things we do consistently leave the biggest mark, whether in parenting, ministry, or friendship. Her motto, "Just be kind," became one of the most repeated lessons in the Cook home. She loves celebrating life's moments, all things Christmas and pink, and cheering for the Oklahoma Sooners.

For more than 20 years, Joe and Danielle have served as regional marriage enrichment directors. They are lead pastors of Hope Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where Joe also serves as a district presbyter and directs regional church planting and revitalization.
